Our Motivation

Two years ago, Men’s 2s player Charlie Greenbeck was diagnosed with Cancer. This is his story:
During November 2018 the men's hockey club was taking part in Movember - raising money and awareness about testicular and breast cancer. I decided to practice what I preached, and checked for lumps (something that should be done regularly anyway) - unfortunately there was a small lump. This came as a shock, however it wasn't causing any pain at the time and I knew soon after Movember finished, exams were around the corner and I'd be home before I knew it. I decided to focus on my exams and leave the lump until I got home - something I shouldn't have done. I had finished my exams and on December 10th was diagnosed with testicular cancer. This came as a surprise, as doctors had examined the lump and it didn't appear to show many cancer-like qualities - however it turned out to be quite an uncommon and aggressive form. By January 26th, surgery removed my cancer and after having found it in it's earliest stage, I felt confident that my battle with cancer was over. Unfortunately, a blood test revealed that my markers were showing abnormal patterns (which implied that my body may still have been fighting a form of cancer) and a CT scan showed a small lump on a lymph node near where my previous cancer had been. Unfortunately this couldn't be treated with surgery, and I needed 9 weeks of chemotherapy, something I knew was inevitable, but something you can't fully prepare for. They tell you exactly what is going to happen, and they give you a million books, each with hundreds of pages about the treatment and the side effects - but nothing really prepares you for chemotherapy, because it's different for everyone. Luckily my experience was about as positive as it could have been - I was only in hospital for 3 or 4 days at a time for 9 weeks, which made it quite managable, as it gave me short recover breaks inbetween stays at the hospital. The staff at the hospital were incredibly professional whilst still being able to chat and be friendly with me. Throughout my time in hospital I tried to stay positive, and not dwell on the negative impacts that cancer has had on my life, but instead try and raise some awareness and money to make sure that something positive comes from my situation.
