Today, the Scottish Government have announced their support for the recent investment by Movember Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK with a six figure boost into prostate cancer research, the most common cancer in men in Scotland.

The money comes as part of a match-funding agreement between Scotland’s Chief Scientist Office and our men’s health partner Prostate Cancer UK. The deal could see up to £500,000 being pumped into prostate cancer research, helping to identify the differences between aggressive and non-aggressive forms of the disease. Prostate cancer continues to be Movember’s global priority, focusing on the areas of Awareness & Education, Survivorship and Research.

The news follows the recent announcement that our men’s health partner Prostate Cancer UK have awarded £691,000 of Movember funds to researchers at the Universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde and Dundee.

After announcing the extra funding, Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Alex Neil MSP, said: “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in Scotland and the fourth most common cancer overall. Prostate cancers range from slow-growing tumours to more aggressive tumours. Slow-growing tumours are common and may not cause any symptoms or shorten life, while aggressive tumours can be more difficult to treat.”

Commenting on this outstanding boost to Scottish university researchers, Prostate Cancer UK’s Director of Research Iain Frame said:
“Whilst incredibly proud to be making these investments we remain acutely aware of how much more still needs to be done to get prostate cancer research on a level footing with other cancers, and crack the disease once and for all.”

This is the first of several announcements about Movember funds in action. Stay tuned for more over the coming months.
