My motivation
Fundraising for cause areas including:
Men's health
Mental health and suicide prevention

The mental health movement represents a significant turn in how medicine, capitalism, and society at large approach the wellbeing of the individual. Conceptual comparisons to mental health in history (or the lack thereof) are elucidatory in this regard. From a sustainability perspective in particular, I am optimistic that an increase in the awareness and institutionalisation of mental health (men's or otherwise) serves as a benefit to all in society. I am also of the (niche?) view that the men's mental health movement is an inherently feminist cause.

Personally speaking, the question of mental health has unfortunately played a major role in my life. Both my family and myself have suffered from poor mental health and this is a journey I am still navigating as a young man today. It is difficult, painful, and sad in ways I could not have imagined. It is also rewarding, motivating, and simply ... it is life. "One must imagine Sispyhus happy" — life is full of struggle, but we can find meaning in it. Every year the Movember challenge serves as a nice reminder of this fact of life, and, perhaps more importantly, reminds us to take care of each other at a grass-roots interpersonal level! Checking in with your friends or strangers goes a long way. Don't be afraid to give it a go.

Two years ago I rowed 42,069 meters. Last year I did 2,070 press-ups and translated a bunch of Ancient Greek comedy. This year I will be doing something even MORE different: for every £ raised I will mine a diamond in Minecraft and complete one pull-up. With an estimated £1000 target, this should be an exciting challenge.

For those of you unfamiliar, Minecraft is an extremely popular computer game. For many, and I count myself among them, it has been a source of joy, relaxation, and human connection for the last 15 years. I would not be able to count the times I have laughed hysterically, smiled peacefully, or collapsed my head into my hands in bitter-sweet despair whilst gaming with my mates and my family. For young men in particular in the 21st century this rings especially true. Mining a diamond for every £ donated may sound very silly (because it is), but that silliness is exactly what makes it such a fitting celebration of the positive experiences Minecraft can offer. I will be live-streaming this difficult challenge throughout the month.

Sadly, though, there is more to life than gaming (☹), so to keep up with the athletic spirit of my previous Movember campaigns, my lats and bis are getting destroyed #nogains; giving attention and love to your body is another important aspect of mental health. I'll record the pull-ups and post them on my Instagram and a Google drive (TBC).
