From 24 February I’ll be attempting to hike with 5 friends to the top of the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres/19,341 feet). It’s a 9-day trek, and if we can overcome the altitude sickness and blisters, we’ll reach the summit on 3 March before returning to base the following day. I’m doing this mainly as a personal challenge but also to raise funds for Movember, a charity which promotes awareness of men’s health issues like prostate cancer and suicide prevention. Movember is best known for its annual moustache-growing event in November, but it needs funding for the other 11 months of the year too. In the UK alone, 12,000 men die every year from prostate cancer. Greater awareness, more extensive screening and better diagnosis will all have a huge beneficial impact on this number.
