Mental health and suicide prevention

Hi All,

Thank you for being here and for supporting Movember — a cause that means a lot to me personally.

As many of you know, Movember isn’t just about growing a moustache — it’s about starting conversations. It’s about shining a light on men’s mental health, suicide prevention, and overall wellbeing. It’s about reminding each other that it’s okay not to be okay.

I want to share something personal, because I think that’s what this month is all about — honesty and connection.

I’ve struggled with anxiety for quite a while. There have been times when my mind has felt like a constant storm — worrying, overthinking, feeling on edge. And I’ve also experienced depression in the past — that heavy, isolating feeling that makes even the simplest things feel impossible.

I'm someone who wears their heart on their sleeve and I've always been extremely open about my struggles with mental health however, like a lot of men, I thought I had to deal with it alone, almost like its my issue to deal with. I shouldn't burden anyone else with my troubles. I thought that admitting I was struggling would somehow make me weak. But the truth is, it takes a lot more strength to open up than it does to stay silent.

I've lost a friend to suicide who felt like there was no way out. He was an integral part of our group. The comedy, the strength, the banter. Cal was all of the above but he was also incredibly kind and caring and above all, loved his mates and his family!

What I’ve learned is that talking helps. Reaching out helps. Whether it’s a mate, a family member, or a professional — opening up can be the first step to getting through it.

Movember reminds us that men’s mental health matters. It’s okay to talk, to cry, to ask for help, and to support each other through the tough times.

If growing a moustache this month gets even one person to start a conversation — if it reminds just one guy that he’s not alone — then it’s worth every awkward stage of facial hair.

So, to anyone who’s struggling right now: please know that you’re not alone. There’s no shame in feeling low or anxious. There’s no weakness in asking for help. In fact, that’s one of the bravest things you can do.

Let’s keep the conversations going — not just in November, but all year round. Check in with your mates. Listen without judgement. And remember that a simple “How are you really doing?” can make a world of difference.

Thank you for listening — and thank you for supporting Movember. Together, we can change the face of men’s health.
