Target: £150
raised £550 since 2014
My motivation
Fundraising for cause areas including:
Prostate cancer

Due to popular demand I'm not planning to grow a moustache this year. Instead I'm taking my bare upper lip, protected only by a face mask, for a 150 kilometres of walks through the mean streets of Havering in memory of my father-in-law.

In June 2014 I was told I had prostate cancer. The diagnosis was later proven to be wrong, but not before I'd learned a little about the cascade of emotions such news causes. A year later my father-in-law lost his long fight with prostate cancer and I saw at first hand what this disease can do to a fit, strong man. I don't want others to suffer the same way if it can be avoided.

How I'm
getting involved
0 of 150 kilometres
walking
I'm moving 60km this Movember for the 60 men we lose each hour of every day.

A month of daily applications of Miracle-Gro is finally over and the result is... underwhelming. Rather whiter than last year, and rather more straggly. Though there is something of the bedraggled walrus about it.

Unfortunately the walking challenge didn't quite go to plan when my left knee attempted a rapid unscheduled disassembly and then swelled up to twice the size of the right. Resting it up and taking a break from daily walks helped, but at the expense of a week of disrupted sleep thanks to calf muscle cramps due to the lack of exercise. Thankfully, today, the last day of the challenge, I was able to get back to a 5 km hobble.

Here's the latest image of the horrific growth on my top lip - you can see why my wife complains of pogonophobia.

But it is worst than that - I've been struck by the Curse of the Exploding Knee Cap!

I've been having a few warning twinges from my left knee for a few weeks now and today this transmogrified into continuous pain - of course at exactly the point when I was furthest from home. Eight hours later and I have a very swollen leg. Damn annoying, since I've only been doing fractionally more mileage than normal. Do I get extra donations if I hop the remaining 42 km?

So, more than a week into Movember and my wife (who doesn't follow me on social media) has only just noticed that I'm growing a moustache... I'm not sure if she needs new glasses, or whether it's just that she can't bear to look at me. She claims the latter. Either way, I'm certain that it is nothing to do with the hair on my upper lip being rather whiter and perhaps a little sparser than previous years...

Untidy, unsightly, and unnecessary... but enough about me. Today the moustache was to come off... but you know, now I'm having second thoughts...

165 Week(s) Ago

End of week 4 report. A total of 212 km walked and £90 raised. I've really enjoyed the motivation to get out and do a bit more walking, and it has done wonders for the backlog on my podcast playlist. My right little toe has seen better days however.

Previous year's activities
165 Week(s) Ago
I walked 2.57 km00:32:17

Last night my Fitbit awarded me a badge for 20,000 steps in one day - apparently the first time since I got my new heart valve. Must work it a bit harder...

165 Week(s) Ago
I walked 3.52 km00:40:07

Nipped out to Pret at lunchtime, via Spitalfields and Aldgate.

165 Week(s) Ago

I'm really looking forward to getting rid of this moustache on Sunday. I visited hospital today for a anticoagulant test. Two nurses came into the waiting room and one said to the other

"You take the lady, I'll take the old man."

I looked around to see where the old man was, but there was nobody else there...

166 Week(s) Ago

Now well into the last week of dragging this monstrosity around the cold, wet, streets of London. Just getting to the stage now where I'll be glad to get rid of this soup-strainer - Dawn expressed the same opinion about 25 days ago.

167 Week(s) Ago

Half way (ish) through Movember and I've carried the heavy burden of my somewhat bedraggled moustache across 109 of the 120 planned kilometres, and am incredible pleased to have received two thirds of the donations needed to hit my target. Apart from one blister where my right little toe is supposed to be it has been incredibly fun.

168 Week(s) Ago
I walked 4.56 km01:08:08

Hit two thirds of the way to my Moustache's travel target on the way home from the hospital today.

168 Week(s) Ago
I walked 2.96 km00:48:40

Today's Movember lunchtime walk took in all the highlights of Croydon. So that was "Forbidden Planet" and... err... um... Oh, yes, the five-sided clock! Possibly the only clock in the UK that is correct just ten times per day.

168 Week(s) Ago
I walked 1.75 km00:22:44

Fireworks!

168 Week(s) Ago
I walked 2.52 km00:31:11

169 Week(s) Ago

Invite me out for a walk will you (if you go from FS at all)! Good effort.

169 Week(s) Ago
I walked 7.93 km01:57:18

Striking out across the smoke-strewn badlands of Romford on my first Movember walk I chanced upon the source of the conflagration. Hopefully not all my walks will end as dramatically as this.

By the way, walking distance is being measured using GPS - my Fitbit is great for counting steps but isn't accurate for distance.
