Our Motivation

Movember is a charity that aims to raise awareness around Men’s health and the biggest issues that men all around the world are currently facing. These issues are Mental Health and Suicide Awareness, Testicular Cancer and Prostate cancer. We as a team of 7 based at the CRC in central Newcastle, are aiming to do our part, by growing a moustache to support Men’s health.
Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK.
Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men, with 129 men every day being diagnosed.
Testicular Cancer, while less common, tends to affect younger men in the age ranges of 15 to 49.

James: As just one of 7 members of our CRC team, I had my own battle with depression for over 10 years and I feel incredibly lucky, that I had the loving support of my family and access to free professional help through our NHS’ wonderful IAPT service, which ultimately saved my life. Thankfully, those days are now but a distant memory, and now I can do my part to help others, with the help of my fantastic ‘Mo’ brothers at the CRC.
Harry: Although we may look fashionable and stylish, the aim of our challenge is serious. Movember is a fantastic way to raise awareness of some of the biggest causes of death for men in the UK. I struggle with my own mental health, having good days and bad days. It’s not something that is talked about enough, especially when faced with dealing with the effects of suicide. As a team of MoBros from the CRC, we're hoping to raise awareness around men's mental health, prostate and testicular cancer with our hairy/fluffy/flourishing top lips. Please donate all you can to this fantastic cause!
Abdul-Aziz: This is what we know about all the issues which Movember aim to raise awareness for: they do not care what colour you are. They will affect anyone, regardless of your skin pigment. Men from various backgrounds should be encourage to talk about their everyday struggles in order to get the support they need in due time. We hope that the diversity in our group will help many men from minority groups to come forward and talk about their mental health. We also hope it will entice more men to see their GPs and be more informed/educated on prostate and testicular cancer.

Andrew: Movember has always been one of those things that I've supported friends and family doing but I decided that I'd give it a go now that I can actually grow facial hair. I've seen some very good friends suffer and even resort to taking their own lives in recent years due to them feeling as if they were unable to talk about or find support for the problems that they were enduring. I've also endured issues with my own mental health and the worst feeling in the world is fearing that nobody will take you seriously and wondering where to even start and if things can get any worse. It's not right that this continues to be a trend on a massive scale and whilst it's true that a moustache might not change the world overnight, I certainly hope it'll help raise some money towards a good starting point.

Tom: Like many Mo bro’s, I have had dark days where I have struggled with my own mental health. Personally, I was never one for sharing feelings until the loss of a loved one made it a necessity. It is something I continue to work on but talking to those around me has genuinely been key to getting myself back on track during those periods of poor mental health. Progress has been made in addressing the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide awareness, but there remains so much more work to do. As well as raising awareness for other significant causes of death to men, namely prostate cancer and testicular cancer that affect each of us directly or indirectly, Movember can continue the momentum required to help those bro’s who need it. Please donate what you can to this essential cause, because each ‘tache and every donation could make a big difference to a bro.
