My motivation is to change the face of men's health. My father had prostate cancer but fortunately managed to beat it, as it was diagnosed early. Early diagnosis was the crucial part to his survival. Thousands of men die each year from this disease and therefore we need to raise awareness.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve dealt with a lot of grief. I’m sad to say I lost my father in March 2020 to cancer and it sucks. He was my mate, my mentor, my hero, but above all, my dad. I lost my mum-in-law and a couple of good friends to cancer, including Paul, who lost his battle to cancer last year. My uncle Bob and my uncle Peter are both currently fighting their own battles with cancer.
So I dedicate every year’s efforts to those that are sadly no longer with us and those that are still in the battle.
Then there’s mental health. Far too many people suffer in silence because they’re either too proud or embarrassed to talk. Far too many men take their own lives through depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. when all they need is someone to reach out to, or someone to reach out to them.
As a former soldier, I am all too aware of the impact that mental illness can take a toll on a person, their family, friends and loved ones.
Again, I am determined to work hard to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues. It’s funny... the older you get, the more this shit hits home.
Last Movember, I chose to shave down, as well as style myself as a pineapple. I chose this because the more ridiculous I look, the more that people are inclined to spark a conversation when they see me. It’s a great ice-breaker to get people talking about men’s health issues.
Remember, if you need to talk - check in with a mate. The kettle will be on.
And if you think something’s up, don’t wait. Check with your doctor. Catching cancer early can save your life.
