All my life I have been the type of man who listened to other guys and tried to help them, but never myself. I either bottled stuff up or put the problem in a box and tried to keep a lid on it.... your brain can’t cope with this forever!

Around 4 years ago I lost one of my best friends and then not long after, I lost my job. I had been with the same company for 36 years, most of my working life. I left all my work colleagues, the daily pressures and the problem solving behind me. A career that I had work so hard at ended, but I could not forget about it or move on. All of this caused a massive hole in my life. This year I turned 60 (a big shock) and with other pressures things culminated for me a few months ago when I made the wrong choices and royally messed up and then just didn't know what to do and couldn't deal with it any more…

Luckily I have a partner who is strong enough to help me through and understand. Clearly, I needed to ask for help, I just couldn't keep all those lids on at the same time! I decided to seek some counselling. For people and friends that know me well, it would be no surprise that I was very sceptical and felt well out of my comfort zone.

I am now 6 weeks in and I feel myself opening up. Through discussion I am starting to answer my own questions and see things much brighter. Clearly you cannot look forward when you haven't got over or dealt with things in your past.

I have only just started my journey but by talking to someone, I have done something that I never thought I would, my dad certainly would never have done (if he was still around, I would have spoken to him) and lots of men with similar mentalities to mine wouldn't do either.

If you have read this and you have no one you can talk to then I would recommend seeking professional help, if I can do it, seek help and some personal answers, then any man can. If, on the other hand, you see a friend that you are concerned for ask him how he is, if he says ok in an abrupt answer ask the same question again, are you ok? It does really work!
