Helping the helpers

We are researchers at the University of York working on a men's mental health study. The BALM study focuses on preventing common mental illness such as low mood and anxiety among male NHS frontline workers.

BALM is delivered in partnership with Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and North West Ambulance Services NHS Trust.

Why are we delivering this study?

Poor mental health is the main reason for sickness absences across the NHS. Men's mental health, in particular, is often poorer than women's. For example, the risk of suicide among male paramedics is 75% higher than the general population.

However, men are often reluctant to seek help due to societal pressures to conform to traditional masculine identities such as stoicism. Figures show, only 34% of people accessing psychological therapies are men.
