“Man up”?

Suicide in men, as most of us do not know, is the leading cause of death among men under 45. That number should feel horrifying because it is horrifying.

Based on some studies, 40% of men won't talk to anyone about their mental health. Why does it seem to be more difficult for men to address their own mental health? The men who are most revered in society (famous, wealthy, successful, powerful) are not always ready to admit their struggles in public and that can leave the “average bloke” feeling uncertain about speaking out.

The societal gender norms that men should be “tough” and “fearless” further complicates this issue as many men feel they are not a “man” if they show any sign of weakness. Men may fail to recognise or act on warning signs and may be unwilling or unable to seek help. It’s important to recognise the signs and encourage each other to speak about how we are feeling – there’s no shame in feeling vulnerable, lost or sad; everyone experiences these emotions.

It is normal for everyone to feel worried, sad, upset, anxious, or experience other difficult emotions from time-to-time, in response to different life events and situations. For most people though, these feelings tend to be only temporary in nature, and are often resolved naturally without causing any long-term problems. However, for some individuals, these negative emotions can become worse over time, resulting in what can become a debilitating mental health condition.

Mental health problems can affect anyone but discrimination and stigma can make people apprehensive to opening up about their experiences and seek help.

Part of the stigma that still exists about mental health for men is that men have greater difficulty talking about their own struggles than women do. There has never been a better time to seek – and be accepted for – help with your mental wellbeing. If you are suffering from poor mental health, it might feel like the hardest step to take but it can lead to easier and better steps too.

The next time somebody tells you to “man up”, remember mental health affects us all regardless of gender so do not feel like being a man (or the perception of what it means to be a “man”) is a barrier to finding the path to a healthier, happier you.

The money raised by Movember will help make a tangible difference to the lives of others, through the world’s most promising cancer research and mental health support programs that support young adults and their families battling and surviving mental health problems.

This is why I make it a point to participate in Movember every year and use it as a conversation opener to raise awareness about Movember, prostrate cancer, men's suicide, and men's mental health.

Do contribute generously for the cause.
Thank you.
