George The Poet: For our fathers, partners, brothers, sons and friends.

Movember
2 minutes read time

British spoken-word artist, poet, and rapper George The Poet wrote and recorded this powerful poem to draw attention to the rising mental health crisis among men in the UK.

In the poem written for Movember, George breaks down the pressures of manhood that many face and the importance of supporting men who may be struggling with their mental health.

George has written the poem in response to alarming figures showing that 3 out of 4 suicides are by men. New research by Movember also shows that eight out of 10 (83 per cent) British men find it helpful when people ask if they’re having a difficult time - yet nearly half (46 per cent) said no one had checked to find out how they were coping during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At a time when fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing a health crisis that isn't being talked about, the poem aims to kickstart conversations and motivate men to stay healthy in all areas of life, with an emphasis on social connection, talking more often, opening about their health, and reaching out in tough times.

George The Poet commented: "It's important for people with a platform to normalise normal. We all know people who have been affected by mental health issues and we stand stronger when we're honest about it. I don't want young men to think they can't open up and reach out. That's why I'm supporting Movember."

" We all know people who have been affected by mental health issues and we stand stronger when we're honest about it. "

The poem follows George’s involvement in Movember’s 2020 celebrity portrait campaign whereby he was photographed with his moustache by acclaimed photographer Greg Williams alongside stars including Sir Mo Farah, Liam Payne, Peter Crouch, Sam Claflin, Russell Tovey and more.
