My motivation

Fundraising for cause areas including:

Men's health
Prostate cancer
Testicular cancer
Mental health and suicide prevention

After seeing an article in a newspaper my Grandfather booked himself a routine check with his GP and was diagnosed with Prostate cancer at 65.

He hadn’t noticed any symptoms, but the examination discovered an enlarged prostate which was biopsied the next day. Weeks later he went under surgery for radical prostatectomy followed by six weeks daily radiotherapy, unfortunately leaving him with some bladder incontinence for which he had an artificial urinary sphincter fitted.

The care he received from the University Hospitals Leicester for 20 years was excellent including - follow ups, scans etc. Over time secondaries appeared in his bones leading to many courses of medications from the oncology dept. He was taking a very expensive drug requiring monthly blood tests. Eventually treatment failed and only option was radioactive injection which was unsuccessful, which left him in considerable pain, and he died three months later aged 85, the last month of this in Loros Hospice.

Living with the cancer also had an adverse effect on his mental health and lead to a change in his personality (so it wasn’t just his bad jokes that my nana had to put up with). It also had a lasting effect on the family as my mum was a nurse, he preferred her to accompany him on his hospital visits becoming very dependent on her for 5 years.

Despite all of this my Pop used his experience of cancer into wanting to help other men in similar situations providing support both monetary and time for Prostaid (Leicester based cancer charity) of which his surgeon was one of the lead figures.

Over the last few years I have also had some significant changes in my life for which I have had to rely on charities for mental health support.

It is for this reason I want to raise awareness and money for the cause so please take part if you feel that you can help.
