Fergus Crawley: Epic Challenges from a Legendary Mo Bro

Movember
2 minutes read time

In 2016 Mo Bro Fergus Crawley sadly attempted to take his own life at the age of 20. He set out to become a man of more words, spreading the word that if men talk about their problems, they can have hope and avoid reaching the same tragic conclusion.

Four years on, and he has set about raising awareness of men’s mental health through a series of epic challenges. More than that, he is close to having raised £100,000 for Movember in the last 3 years. This year he took on possibly his greatest challenge yet; the vertical marathon. Eleven months of planning and preparation led to 11 days of effort, attempting to achieve 42.2km of vertical gain by climbing up and down Ben Nevis 32 times.

Fergus wrote these words after finishing Project Vertical:

“Monotony. Dread. Loneliness. Pain. Darkness. Doubt. Fear. Fight. Shame. Everything that this project represents, and sadly what thousands of men suffer from in silence every single day. This doesn't have to be the case. An attempt at the world's first Vertical Marathon in 11 days, to raise funds and awareness for men's health and suicide prevention during Movember.”

“We climbed our own mountain, to encourage others to climb theirs, whatever that may be. We covered over 205 miles, with 26,500m of vertical gain, and most importantly, know that the project managed to start meaningful conversations along the way. Be a man of more words, as talking saves lives.”
